Good breakdown Jerry. I thought this was awful. And I was a fan of all DGG's Halloween pics, so I really wanted to love this. The few brief nuggets that worked just reminded me how great the original was. What they did to Burstyn's character should be criminal.

@@JerrySaraviaCinema1895 Definitely. I'm with you on the rankings as well. It's basically the original....a big gap....then #3. The rest are worthless. The funny thing is the reason #3 mostly works is it's basically a police procedural/serial killer story. Exorcist lore is almost irrelevant to it.

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise? I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life… He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself.

No, it will always will be a disappointing film(s). What it does have going for it is that it was at least made by one person who wasn't beholden to a corporate board room. Compared to the sequels which are a corporate mess, the prequels are at least made by someone who cared about them and tried to tell a story. Lucas may have failed to execute his artistic vision, but at least he tried to make art. Audiences want a return to artists telling stories (which the prequels are), not more corporate products designed to meet engagement metrics (which the sequels are). And this is what people are responding to regarding the prequels - those movies are bad, but only in the way that art is bad when made by an artist who at least tried. We all respect Lucas for trying even if the end product didn't live up to expectations. We'd rather see 5 failed films made by people who at least tried rather than 1 more corpo Disney / Marvel "entertainment product".

Yes. It has stood the test of time. I recently watched the movie for the first time on the big screen at theatres, for the 25th anniversary. Some of the strengths which stood out to me: - CGI effects aren't _that_ bad - due to the fact that CGI was still in its relative infancy at the time, filmmakers had to do more with less (they had to actually work hard). I thought they did a clever job at weaving the CG into the special effects and set pieces. The CG is fitting, like it naturally belongs in the world and doesn't look out of place - The pod racing scene is an incredibly shot and choreographed sequence with genuine tension and emotion - John Williams score - I do not speak merely of the famous Duel of the Fates theme but the general background music which complements both dramatic and casual scenes - Furthermore, this movie generally has some of the most incredible sound design/effects, sound editing & mixing I've ever heard - Atmosphere - I felt like I was IN the Star Wars universe. It may be a lesser Star Wars film, but it still _feels_ like a Star Wars film, unlike the Disney sequels which didn't have that same...magic - Liam Neeson is one of my favourite casting choices of all time. I consider Qui-Gon Jinn to be the 'perfect' depiction of everything a Jedi should be in terms of appearance, temperment, charm, mannerisms, style, etc. - The politics of Star Wars - unlike many others, this was a subplot I actually enjoyed not just about The Phantom Menace but the prequels as a whole. The political undertone serves an adequate purpose in terms of being the foundation of the sinister element surrounding the mystery of the sith, which the next 2 movies would build upon and utilise in terms of transitioning the status quo from Jedi rule to Sith takeover Thanks for reading. If you haven't already, I highly recommend the 'making of' documentary of The Phantom Menace. The amount of craftsmanship and attention to detail the filmmakers put into this project is absolutely staggering. George Lucas clearly poured his heart and soul into it. I feel it deserves at least some appreciation.

The problem is that the annoying, always complaining portion of the Star Wars fandom only seems to know about one thing: Star Wars. When you listen to them "reasoning" it appears like they have never watched anything else. So when a new SW movie or series comes out, that has something in it, that wasn't previously mentioned in an older SW thing, they absolutely lose it and start hyperventilating.

I was a kid when they all came out, saw em all in the theatres. No complaints really. As a kid all you focus on is the flashy stuff so growing up it was nice to actually follow a consistent story line unlike the Disney saga, Very different feels, Even though I was older once those ones had come out. Even the original trilogy was flawed, and often overrated, as film in an absolute sense - but Star Wars was also bigger, and better, simply as a mythological concept, than it could ever be realized on the screen. Empire did the best in fulfilling the franchise's potential, while Jedi became more childish than childlike in its approach, a problem that would plague the series as it continued. The Phantom Menace was simply a bad movie, although I agree the films are more enjoyable overall in a climate of reduced expectations that are modest at best. Star Wars is not the be all and end all of film, fiction or mythology. Anyone who had their childhood "assaulted" by a bad Star Wars film is taking Star Wars far too seriously.

But I don't listen to it and musically I don't like the sound. Inversely I might find myself singing along to a Katy Perry pop song (haha). Fine, whatever. BUT if I was tasked with critiquing them it would be of no value to dismiss the former, while championing the later. What would be the point. To my sensibilities good movie criticism has to have enough awareness of the medium to be able to identify what the objectives are and then whether it succeeds on those terms. There is some level of objectivity with that. For me the worst films, in a critical sense, have a clear objective then fail utterly at it. Just my two cents anyway.

@@ablacknambercat That's fair. There's nuance in all these terms, right? For me "ambition" would translate into passion and sense of quality. A good example for me would be something like Sam Raimi's early Evil Dead films. Ultra-low budget b-movie horror. But Raimi and Campbell were obviously passionate and inspired - as a result they deliver an undeniable classic of the genre. A good critic should be able to recognize that and make the case that they might be more important films than many Oscar winners.

Even though he's facing away from us he's still facing upwards, it's somewhat noticeable that you can still read his lip movements from that POV. I also don't get why they didn't use more alternate footage like the ones shown in the TV spots like Andy saying "he's a loose cannon." In the TV version of that scene when Andy says "He's out of his fuckin' mind," they just replaced the f-bomb with "stupid" which hilariously sounds like broken English.

Watching those films hasn't taken anything away from the rest of my life. I work, cook good food, read books, paint pictures, make films myself, and have a lot of non-film experiences also. The only way it would be unhealthy is if that's all you did, or only watched stupid films.

Right, but the same could be said for having a glass of wine with dinner or having a beer at a baseball game. The key is moderation. And the culture of cinema right now is not moderation....it's people losing their minds over Star Wars, Marvel, Zach Snyder, etc.

@@timdaugherty7612 I'm not referring to those kind of films. My references are the great films of the silent era, German Expressionism, Poetic Realism of 1930's France, Japanese New Wave, French New Wave, Satyajit Ray's Indian films, Fellini, Cassavetes, Tarkovsky, and others. And even the junk films will never cause you to overdose or get cirrhosis of the liver, just a junky mind. Garbage in, garbage out. It's a matter of expanding your mind and the will to push boundaries.

@@littleghostfilms3012 Understood. I think there is nuance, and of course semantics. But I do see some parallels between over-zealous film culture lately and other forms of addiction. Which I understood to be the main point of Jerry's video. Ie, not directing this response to you or your movie watching habits, but the toxic culture of endless film deconstruction online.

no because there's only about 250 "great" films and 650 "good" films so if you're only motivated by artistic value, you'll burn through all the good movies very quickly and then have to wait for new good films to be created (which amounts to about 1 a year) the only way it can be unhealthy is if you have a sub-80 IQ and watch the endless stream of garbage everyday, which is basically designed for mexicans and chinese people

It may not have been the first "found footage" film but it was absolutely the first at knowing how to market it. Brilliant. No one watched Cannibal Holocaust and thought it was potentially real. You could never duplicate the magic of having seen this in the theater, opening weekend, back in 1999. It's just a different world cinematically now...especially with the proliferation of social media, etc. If this were to happened it would be deconstructed and analyzed a thousand different ways before it even opens. Interviews with the cast, director, horrible trailers, etc.

Movies are an escape. A chance to disconnect from your own life for a few hours and experience 'Other'. Ideally they can help us understand and empathize. But like drugs and alcohol, too much escapism can be detrimental. You see it on Cinema based social media all the time. People losing any real world perspective at the expense of endlessly deconstructing films. If you don't have your own life and experiences there is no context other than some fantasy land of others. Also increasingly unhealthy is the TMZ-ification of those involved in film making. Fan boy culture. Boo.
